It was a lovely Sunday morning and the sun was shining bright! We arrived at the ballpark 30 minutes early! Today is the very first football game for our little guy. Yay! First ones in the lot! Uh, oh……. No equipment has been set up on field…..hmmm. Okay, so we’ll handle that. We can get the stuff and help set this field up. No biggie.
Okay, everyone’s here, parents, players, siblings with all of their toys to keep them busy. Umbrellas are getting pitched. Moms without makeup are lugging their pop open chairs and the Dads are dragging their butts after a long work week. Okay, so let’s get the team geared up! Oh, looks like the parents want to sit and watch us get their kid’s gear on while they just sip on their coffee tumblers.
Hey, has anyone seen the coach? Oh, here’s the ref! It’s his first time reffing? This can’t be good. Well, it’s okay….it’s not like the NFL or anything…this is local suburbia flag football. Coach?....anyone?.....game starts in 2 minutes. Okay……my hubby’ll be the coach today. What a guy!
Team looks good. Let’s go! We don’t need the coach….we are ready! Oh,…..there is the other team’s coach and he is the spitting image of Mr. Incredible!!!! Nice! But, he does not have game play wristbands in four fashionable colors? We do, Sucka!!!!
Okay, it’s 9:05…..oh, here comes the coach! Is that a Venti Caramel Macchiato in his hand? He had time for a Starbucks run! Wow! I tell you folks, Starbucks is a serious priority for many humans! Not that I’m bagging, because for me it is very, very serious too. I don’t like his tardiness but I understand he needs the fix.
Coach brings a lot of fun energy (may be a triple macchiato in that cup) and we are happy he has shown up! Kids surprisingly look like they kind of, sort of, understand how to play this game. Cool! Game begins!
It’s half time. Who is snack Mom? What, nobody worked on that? Oh, thank God, another Mom knew this would happen and pulls out cute little fruit bags. She is amazing in her glory standing next to her igIoo cooler overflowing with nutritional refreshments! I, for one, am truly grateful because all I have is a crummy snack bag of pretzels and that just is not going to cut it for the entire team.
The game goes very fast which surprises me since I associate football with super long games. But, this is good. Short, sweet and fun for the kids. That same wonderful Mom that had half time snack also has end of game snacks and at this point I’m just in awe of her!
Final score is tied and the kids are feeling proud. I am proud too. I am proud of my son who ran hard and played well. I am proud that my daughter was texting me asking me to come get her from the sleepover party because she doesn’t want to miss brother’s first game. I am proud that my husband shows up early to help out and steps into the role of Coach so the other guy can get his Starbucks (it’s an addiction, really it is). It’s all good.
The game ends in a tie. The boys are all feeling like winners! Yay!
Everyone has packed up and is headed for their SUVs and Minivans. But wait….the flags and the footballs need to be returned to the office! No worries…..we got it!
